I am led to believe that the Coat of Arms which adorns the gates of the Burgh Chambers, was made by my grandfather,John Johnston, the blacksmith (Auld Jeck) but I do not know when. The motto was contrived by the illustrious Douglas Young,a classical scholar, who lived in Dougal Street, and who also collaborated with William Lorimer in translating the New Testament from the original ancient scripts into “Auld Scots”. The motto is cleverly put together,as it is a pun,in Latin, literally “You must bear yourself highly”,but ut also says: Tayport-Auld Tay Ferry.

The above Coat of Arms was granted on 12 June 1953 by the Lord Lyon King of Arms in Edinburgh, following a petition by the Tayport Burgh Council dated 10 February 1953.

I think the word referred to as “AULD is in fact “ALBA” the latin name for Scotland.
