The tennis club was first formed in the 1880s and has certainly had it ups and downs. In the early 1900s the club was wound up altogether, with the town council taking over the grounds in 1902 and planning alternative use of the land as a bowling green. Although the green did not materialise, the tennis club experienced more difficulties between the wars, and it was not until after Worl War Two that the sport gained more interest and popularity. This 1950s picture illustrates the tremendous changes in style and fashion even since then.
