Spinning

Local History

Tayport Works, or the Spinning Mill, was the largest of all the industrial concerns, or at least was the one employing the greatest number of workpeople. It was started in 1864 by Matthew Blackie for the purpose of spinning jute yarns to meet the demands of the manufacturers in the district engaged in making various kinds of jute cloth.

The works were conveniently situated alongside the railway. A large burn formed their southern boundary, supplying ample fresh water for the engines for condensing purposes.
