Ironfounding

Local History

In 1865, Mr Isaac Gray purchased a property in Tay street, where he erected a cupola and small foundary, which he carried on for a few years, but as he suffered from a severe accident which he met with at Cupar a few years before, he gave up the business and let the foundary to the Messrs Moir in 1870, who carried on the business for two or three years.

It was acquired by Messrs W. & J. Ferguson in 1874, who, finding the premises too small, bought the property on the south and in 1888 built a new foundry, fully equipped for all sorts of loam, dry sand, and other castings required in the district; they did extensive business with firms as far as Aberdeen.

The partnership was dissolved in 1897, but the business was continued by Mr James Ferguson, who in 1903 found that more accommodation was necessary, built new offices and stores, and assumed his son, John, as partner, under the name of James Ferguson & Son.
