My friend and I used to camp on Lucky Scalp when we were teenagers. Rumour had it that the tower was built by monks - thus the cross on the top. It marked the position opposite the major change in the navigation channel. Vessels altered course to steer north-west just before the tower was abeam. The salmon look-out theory seems unlikely as there was no observation access on the tower. Also, I cannot remember any sign of an internal stairway. It did have a fireplace and the chimney vent can be seen half-way up the building on the east side in one of the photos. Erosion of the foundation caused to tower to tilt which is why it was demolished.

it was blown up sometime between Sep 1978- Jul 1979. I was in Mr Lumsden’s primary 6 class and he took us all down to the Sea Wall (promenade) to watch.
