I loved this boat, Radiation, also the Isabella Fortuna, I remember being on Radiation with my grandad, Jackie while he worked and he wanted me to pass him a pick axe up to him and as I climbed off the boat onto the ladder I dropped the thing in the water he wasn’t pleased!

This takes me well back. I remember working on Radiation. Wore down goodness knows how many angle-grinder discs, fell down the engine room ladder once and also got a 240V shock down the arm. Also remember sailing with Hobson Rankin et al on Isabella Fortuna at least three times. Was complimented by Hobson who said that I seemed to be the only one who knew what they were doing. Once was from Tayport to the rail bridge and back, another was over to Broughty Ferry for some media stuff and the other was down to Anstruther. Ah, those were the days. Who knows, maybe I can crew Isabella Fortuna again some day.

My uncle Alex Gardner was the skipper in 1966 and took me with him from Aberdeen to Peterhead. He took her out of the harbour and headed for Peterhead. He then gave me the wheel, told me the heading and let me take her. I was eleven years old. It was the biggest thrill of my life to that point. The compass was mounted high above the wheel and to this day I can still remember how sore my neck was.
