I remember the Saturday afternoon matinees in the late 50s/early 60s. It was 9d to get into the front rows where the seats were really hard. With a shilling pocket money, there was 3d left for an ice lolly. O think it was 1/6 to get into the soft seats and two bob for the balcony (which was only about 4ft from the ground at it’s highest point!) Ah…memories of seeing films like Greyfriars Bobby, Elvis movies and Dr No…to name but a few.

It was only sixpence for the wooden seats in my time ,I remember breaking my bar of toffee on the back of the seat in front, great stuff

The Picture House was for many years owned by Dundee based cinema magnate J. B. Milne. Photos of the interior and exterior can be seen on the scottish cinemas website.

JBM used to have his managers phone his house (ruthven Mansion near Alyth) every night but because the call went via the operator he had a code which was used which told him how much the stalls, balcony and ice cream/drinks sales took. I was told this by someone who had been a manager for jbm

i wish it would open again because people would go there instead of hanging about the streets causing trouble

I remember when it burnt down in the 40’s. We all went up to have a look. The smell of burning lasted for ages.
